Hey guys. I’ve been a KISS fan for 30 years or so, and a podKISSt fan for 6 months now, since I bought my iPod and stumbled on to episode 49, which is the earliest I have available. I’ve been listening ever since. Over the last few days, I’ve been catching up with the back catalog, starting all the way from the beginning. This episode is particularly great! Sounds like you guys had even more of a blast than usual interviewing her. I’m putting my copy of KISSology 2 in the DVD player right now to watch for all of those things you were taling about!

You guys were talking about the comic art from the original Marvel books. A few of the pages were on display at the Kiss Konvention in 1995… I’m a huge comic fan and an art collector, and I was told by many artists that Gene owns ALL the official Kiss comic art that was ever published. This was also confirmed to me by Dan Parent, artist on Archie Meets Kiss. It was in his contract that Gene would get all the artwork. Dan also said he was a little sad because he could have made a lot more money selling those himself but he says he’s been doing a lot of Kiss sketches now at conventions.

You couldn’t have picked more boring people to interview about the early days of KISS. Why would you ask a question about Jennette Frehley and what she was like back then? Who really gives a shit about her. Sometimes I think hard-core Kiss fans are just short of being stalkers… I suppose your next question might be how many pieces of corn are (on average) in Gene’s shit, and how does it effect his songwriting. Do any of you have jobs? Being a pumpkin-carver in October doesn’t count! If you don’t have interesting topics to pod-cast, then don’t pod-cast.

I’ll keep it short and sweet… The Who’s “TOMMY” was considered by fans and critics to be a rock n roll conceptual masterpiece… Those songs minus Pinball wizard sounded nothing like the Who (to me). The movie TOMMY I saw for the first time two months ago… It made absolutely no sense. The acting, and story line was incredibly hard to follow and stupid. The Elder was and is very much a Kiss album, It simply took hardcore fans out of their comfort-zones. The song compositions hit every mark intended (in my book)! It was what it was… expressive, epic, bold, elegant and very interesting… Why does gold or platinum status have to sway us into believing whats artistically significant P.S. If I ever got a chance to go to a unplugged Kiss concert and Request a song for them to play, it would be “Naked City”… You guys are the best… Big fan of your POD-CAST shows

Interesting to hear choices for worst album, all bar one from the 80′s??? Animalize – incredible guitar work, Asylum – Tears & Trail by Fire, Unmasked – still some great tracks, COS – heavy & dark (Jungle!!!) but I gotta say the album acronym for “HITS” should have started with the letter from the word “So”, no redeeming tracks (Forever??maybe) but its devoid of any quantity of quality tracks, so yes Ken, I’d agree with your selection. Maybe you guys could select worst song next time…..”In my head”(COS), just the pits, hard to believe Gene could possibly write this bad. BTW, any Monster samples or gossip??? Long Live PodKISSt!

Hey Gary, regarding this “Only You riff” subject, you might as well like to hear the song “Nasty Nasty” from the 3rd Black and Blue album (produced by Gene). You’ll find this same riff in there too. The song also contains the “Domino” riff (on another key, though).

Thanks for this brilliant work you guys are doing! It’s (by far) the best Kiss thing on the internet.

Really well managed discussion by some real enthusiastic, knowledgeable fans. Refreshing to hear everyone offer their genuine opinions without hesitation. This would be the most controversial album ever released by KISS and either the most loved or most disliked album at that. Personally, I have always been curiously attracted to this album. It is the most interesting album of KISS’s catalogue. A really well constructed album with excellent musicianship, the most captivating point is the albums atmosphere and mood. I agree the highlight is “A world without heroes”, the tear from Simmons in the associated video is fitting with the songs theme. Yes, it was antithesis of who we knew KISS were at that point in time. Comments on “Mr Blackwell”, well understood. However, with the song being about the villain, it all seems to make sense to me. The song in my opinion was meant to embody, evil, so maybe it should have sounded weird, strange and distorted. It does give the listener a “erry spooky sinsiter feeling”. At the time of release in 81, it was way too much for a young teenager to handle, but over time this has transformed into probably one of KISS’s most thought provoking, entertaining releases. I also loved Stanleys vocals on “Just a Boy”, Odyssey was the low point for me. The 1981 song listings provided a better flow to the album, “the Oath” moved to the front of the album as opposed “Odyssey”. Can’t wait for a in depth PODKISST on creatures of the night, COS, Revenge. Well done to the PODKISST crew, maybe one day we’ll hear you running a radio station? Rock On. JAB

Hey guys, great job on the “Elder” discussion. While I didn’t agree with every opinion spoken (I personally think this album is a work of genius and I think the concept works very well within the lyrics and all), I think the way it was discussed and debated was done very well and with intelligence…..and that seems to be a rarity these days! Please keep up the good work and if you ever do another “Elder” discussion someday I look forward to it! Cheers.

P.S. In regards to the comment made during the ‘cast about whether or not Ace is even really audibly playing anything during “A World Without Heroes” on “Fridays”…..if you also watch the clip of them performing “The Oath” you’ll notice quite a few curious discrepancies. For one thing, at the start of the song there’s a pick-scrape on the strings (like the one Ace does later during the performance of “I” just after the finger-snapping breakdown section), but if you watch all the performers, none of them actually perform this pick sliding motion! Was this an overdub done later in post-production of the program, or was it (as I have heard rumoured) a backup musician behind the scenes filling out the sound? Someone was playing the electric piano bits during “…Heroes” on that broadcast as well, so who knows? Plus, particularly in reference to Ace’s playing, while most of his fretting-hand positions look to be roughly accurate during most of “The Oath”, just moments before he takes his solo, he is seen looking over towards his amp (and most likely his guitar tech), gives him a nod, and Ace quickly turns up his volume knob on his guitar and you can tell that the tonality of his guitar wasn’t present in the mix up to that point. My thinking is, his amp was on stand-by (or turned considerably low), and his guitar volume was totally down or almost all the way off, and he just kicked in his guitar for the solo, and that’s all the actual “live” guitar you hear from Ace during that performance. Odds are more than likely that he’d never even performed that song with the band other than whatever involvement he had during the album’s recording (which, again to my understanding, was that Ace didn’t contribute rhythm guitar tracks to tunes like “The Oath”, it was all Paul) and the brief run-through/rehearsal they did at the t.v. studio earlier that day. Which would also explain why Ace’s solo was so raw and off-the-cuff as well. Also, if you listen to the performance of “I” from “Fridays”, it sounds as if Ace’s guitar is in fact turned up and featured more prominently in the mix as compared to the way “The Oath” sounds. Perhaps Ace felt more comfortable with that song and given that it’s a far simpler tune to play and such, he was more able to be audibly featured in the mix? I dunno, this is all just coming from a guitar geek like myself so take it for whatever it’s worth, haha. After watching those clips for almost 30 years I’ve just noticed this silly stuff!

I just joined today and just finished listening to ‘The Council Of The Elder’. A few thoughts of my own. First of all, thanks for spending some time on this record. It never gets seriously discussed and I enjoyed the entire conversation. I’ve had some pretty good conversations with friends about this and I would have liked to be in the room with you guys.

I won’t go song by song, but I can tell you that I clearly remember the first day I heard this album with my friend and I just fully accepted it as KISS. In my mind, who was I to determine what KISS record was or wasn’t? This is just what KISS was at that point. I was 12 and the thought of having an opinion of an album or even an expectation never entered my mind. I still feel that way. Of course I now say things like I wish this and that, but not then.

I also attended ‘The Elder’ play that took place at the Athens, Wisconsin High School in 1996 and it opened up the album for me seeing it played out in a theater setting. The people who put the play together also added SEVERAL new songs to the ‘soundtrack’ to fill out the story and I think it really worked. I have the CD of the cast soundtrack and it’s actually ok. ‘Mr Blackwell’ got a lot of flack in the podcast, and I have to say that this song is the one that struck me the most thinking back on the play. Blackwell was indeed the bad guy, and when it was time for this song, the mood in the gym was dark, brooding, and pretty sinister. The kid who portrayed the character stepped into a black light and Gene’s makeup was revealed on his face..it could not be seen through the entire play, only when he stepped into that light. The soundtrack itself was played live/on tape. The musical director sat at the sound board playing guitar live to a tape they had made of the music and all the vocals were live. Another great moment was ‘Under The Rose’. In the blackness of one scene, unbeknownst to the audience, kids encircled the entire audience and down the middle aisle…all the lights went out and they all lit candles and ‘UTR’ was played to only candle light by the robed actors. The chorus sounded huge sung live in the gym by all of these people and damn if I didn’t chime in myself.

It was a great KISS experience and I think the play is out there as a bad bootleg.

I really wish KISS would have released t-shirts of the album cover art like they did with the distressed shirts they put out for other albums (Unmasked, my favorite album of all time would have been great too). I hate the way it’s dismissed, though I understand their embarrassment. I don’t expect them to laud it as their Sgt Pepper or anything but no matter what is said, it’s there. Embrace it, mistake or not. I love the album and always will. I made my own version where the songs all overlap as a single piece and it’s very pleasant to listen to that way.

Hey, I revisited the remastered version with the original track listing on a good set of headphones. I heard things I’ve never heard before. The beginning of “fanfare” has the wind chimes yaknow.. I never notice the train horn blowing faintly in the background. Very odd! Also, the latter part of Only You, that rhythm run after Paul’s vocal, you can hear it reincarnated in the song Lonely is the Hunter bridge to the solo. Also it’s there in one of Wendy O’ Williams songs. I do have a demo called “The council of the Elder” that has some of the working rhythms of Only You. Also, Exciter IMO is the brother to The Oath. Put them up next to each other. Podcast folks, I definately enjoyed it! Keep them coming!

KISS ALIVE! was mostly overdubed, it’s true, 90% of the record was not recorded live. However we were able to capture the live feel. Example, on Duece Paul say’s “Do It” only once but on the record he say’s it twice. That was Eddie Kramer mistake. I begged them to delete the first “do it” because the kids knew that Paul only said it once. However I was too late, the record was on it’s way to the pressers.
You guy’s were spot on with your musings. Excellent guy’s!
I agree with you 100% about Peter and Strutter and Ace’s tone in Duece. Just super guy’s.

There is a great version of “Tomorrow” on a a cd called “KAOL @ Creatures of the Net.” Track 9 is an unplugged version performed by a band called Shameless. I know it’s not KISS doing it, but this version does show the deep emotion to the lyrics. I just thought I would bring this to your attention in case you haven’t heard it. I agree with you guys that “Tomorrow” is one of the best songs on the Unmasked album!

Hi Guys. Love the podkisst/cast. Interesting memory here about Unmasked. I purchased it on vinyl through e-bay about 5 years ago and got the MINT condition poster framed. Great piece of pop art which when framed is worth a fair amount. Now, at the time I learned that Victor Stabin lived in Pennsylvania and I e-mailed him about getting the poster signed. He actually refused and said I could buy a new poster, signed, for $120. What’s the point? Grr

What the hell?? Why does Mick Campise’s interview get cut off and interrupted just when it was getting really interesting. Maybe it was a bad edit, but it sounds like you cut him off to cover up what he was saying about having his riffs stolen by Gene? Dissapointing moment, but the interview was really good though.

And you mention Black diamond as being a re-recording in the Kiss symphony making of segment.
I´ve always thought it was one of the soundboard recordings from 94-95. Listen to the drums, thay sound way more Singer 92-95.

Only recently discovered PodKisst… and i love it. the rare / bootleg stuff is great and I love to hear you guys talk in depth about Kisstory (especially the Phantom episode).

With all the love for Unmasked in the most recent Podkisst can i request a Unmasked 30th Anniversary for May please. I think song for song Unmasked is my favourite album and i feel it’s very overlooked.

I first heard it 1994 when i was 17 and soundtracked my teenage summer perfectly.

Man I loved this edition of the podkisst, I was sitting on the bus to work (in Glasgow, Scotland) at about 8am and I was almost pi$$ing myself with laughter at this interview. My fave bits from the interview are the “Good Morning!” bit about Bea Arthur and I loved it when she went “ohhhh noooo!” like Melissa, I found those bits hilarious! the energy and sence of fun between you all really comes across. Lisa sounds like such a cool lady, I bet grabbing a few beers with her would be such fun.
Cheers for making me laugh and re-generating my interest in the movie again (I havent seen it since about 1992 after buying it on VHS), I need to toute it out the next time I’m at my parents house.

I love podkisst !!! i’m a new fan but better late then never ! I loved the banter with Lisa an you guy’s had me laughing from start to end .It’s so nice to know there are other fan’s that hold KISS meet’s the phantom as high as i do for not only what is is..but for what is try’s so hard to be lol . when Lisa talk’s about the “slave dude” whipping that guy i was dying for one of you to bring up that they have that guy doing the whipping as one of the three that do the the screen’s play by play on “kissolagy 2″.

i’m a long time KISS fan, long time podkisst fan, but i have to take exception with the monkees comment. being a avid monkees fan, as well, head is by far, one of the best rock movies out there. in my opinion, only the beatles two movies were better. just my two cents. keep up the great work.

i love this Council of the Elder you have. It’s a great way for us KISS Army soldiers to get down and dirty about a certain KISS or KISS related topic.

here’s a topic idea. the replacements in the makeup and etc would be a cool discussion to really talk about. it’s a real hot thing that made the KISS Army cut and dry between the ones who hated it and the ones who don’t

that story really touched me. i read that article on KISS online and the man that saved his bass out of all the things he could save is definitely one of the top KISS Army soldiers. our hearts and prayers in the KISS family go to those people involved in the fire
